Psychiatric Provider

Lavena McCullum

I am a board certified Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, practicing in Oregon, Washington, and Indiana. I graduated summa cum laude from OHSU with my undergraduate degree and completed graduate studies as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in 2017 at the University of Southern Indiana. Additionally, I have completed a year-long fellowship in integrative psychiatry with the Integrative Psychiatry Institute in Boulder, CO. Ask me about the neurobiology of music and humor and how both can positively affect the very same neural pathways in the brain that are negatively affected by depression and anxiety.

My mission is to help people find greater clarity, emotional well being, and physical health in a life of purpose and meaning. My practice style is down-to-earth, intuitive, and direct. During our first appointment, we will spend time discussing your psychiatric and medical history, why you are seeking care, and what your goals are–working together to develop your treatment plan, which may include medications, supplements, genetic testing, and brief, supportive psychotherapy. We will also look at how sleep, nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction strategies may enhance your wellbeing.

I am licensed to treat patients across the lifespan, and presently focus on adults, and older adults, in the treatment of: Opioid Use Disorder (Suboxone therapy), adult ADHD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and smoking cessation.

Treatment Modalities Offered

Emotionally Focused

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a modality that focuses on understanding and transforming emotional responses within relationships. It emphasizes the importance of emotional bonds and helps couples or individuals navigate and strengthen their connections.

Psychoanalytical

Psychoanalytical therapy delves into the unconscious mind to explore deep-seated thoughts and behaviors. Rooted in Freudian principles, this modality aims to bring unconscious elements to conscious awareness, facilitating personal insight and growth.

Psychological Testing and Evaluation

Psychological Testing and Evaluation involve the use of standardized assessments to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s mental health. These assessments help in diagnosing conditions, planning treatment, and guiding therapeutic interventions.

Coaching

Coaching focuses on personal and professional development, helping individuals set and achieve specific goals. It is a collaborative process where the coach provides guidance, support, and accountability to promote positive changes in various aspects of life.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered approach that explores and enhances an individual’s intrinsic motivation to change. It is particularly effective in addressing issues related to substance abuse, health behaviors, and ambivalence toward change.

Strength Based

Strength-Based Therapy focuses on identifying and leveraging an individual’s strengths and positive attributes to promote resilience and personal growth. It shifts the focus from pathology to empowering clients through their inherent capabilities.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT)

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy combines elements of mindfulness meditation with CBT techniques. It is effective in preventing the recurrence of depression by enhancing awareness of thoughts and emotions.
